House funk

It's that time of year again. Everyone is lightening and brightening up their homes for the summer. And, as usual, I'm stuck for ideas.

My house is mainly earth tones. I love earth tones. I'm also not one to change out every piece of decor for the seasons. I like to add a few things here and there, but I don't change out my drapes or my rugs or my bedding. I just don't have the time, the extra cash or desire to do all of that. So, I feel stagnant on what I can do to summer things up in here. Because I have a lot of dark, rich, earthy colors, it seems silly to throw in a shell here or a flower there and hope it looks summery, you know? I think maybe I just need fresh eyes to look in and help out. Those eyes being yours!

Any grand, superb, smart ideas? :) I guess I could make pillow covers for the couch pillows. I hate that fabric anyway. I'm just stuck in a rut.

I feel you girly! I am in the same boat 99% of the time! I have the same exact color couch that you have and I'm pretty sure it's the same material, too! All my wall downstairs are painted in brown colors, too. I painted my hutch bottom that the tv sits on white to bring some brightness in the room. Jason also put new baseboards down that are bigger and painted them white. I threw some yellow colored things in (like pillows) to try to brighten up that went with the red couch color and brown walls well b/c it was still earth tones.
Happy summering it up hun! I think it looks great though!

I love your couchs and pillows... looks like we have been shopping at the same store... rooms to go. We got our entire leather living room set there... love there stuff! I would add some accents to the coffe table... summery floral arrangements... hob lob is the place.

I was going to suggest summery pillows. How about a bright piece in place of the mirror above the lamp?
And definitely a summer arrangement on your coffee table...shells and starfish. or a bright pretty flower arrangement? This would all still go with your earth tones.

You have a great foundation with beautiful earth tones! To me, summer means bringing in whites, creams, and sandy tones with pops of fresh color.

I can see it now!...Summery stripe pillow covers, lighter drapes (maybe just sheers), some light fabric and centerpiece to lighten up the coffee table, and a new summer-inspired mantel display. Instant summer feel!

I have the same mirror above my couch! I have an earth tone house but I add apple greens and yellows. Maybe get some palm leaves from HL and go that route, that's what I have and I really like it. Check out my blog and on my house pictures it will link back to a site on rate my space and if you view her house she changes out stuff but doesn't really buy stuff. One of her bedrooms is a summer look, I think you will get inspired there.

Don't feel bad I don't change out for summer. I like the way my house is. Plus it's a mess with my two girls most of the time.
If you want to change something change the pillows, that is alway an easy change. Your house is very pretty.

OK, I'm going out on a limb here, but I'm thinking slipcover the couches. Light Blue or a light sandy color. If you go sand, everything else can can stay. If you go blue, pick up the rug and [recover or] buy new pillows and you're done.
The blue would be awesome, and I only suggest it as a slipcover, I would never buy a blue couch-that would get old quick, but as a slipcover, it's fun.
We bought a really cute shag rug at Lowe's that is dark brown, light brown and blue -all mixed together for $200. That was the 10x12, the 8x10 is only $100. Not bad.

Kelli beat me to it, but I was gonna mention slip covers...new pillows and flowers!

I am with you on this one! My house is done in similar colors so lightening it up is a challenge. I think it looks great as it is but if you want a change, I agree with most of the comments....summery pillows and something colorful on the coffee table. Let us know what you decide!

I'm the same way! But I'd say add some color with throw pillows. Maybe a small rug? What about one piece of art that ties your current colors with brighter colors? I love neutrals... but my previous homeowner was not the same! I'm slowly making it mine... or at least a nice combo. :)

I don't change my decor for the seasons. I do add things for holidays of course, but that's different. I think maybe changing out some of your mantel decor for something with a little color may help. Perhaps pick up a summer bouquet at the market and put it in a pretty vase. I really don't see anything wrong with your decor, but i understand you are tired of it. I think we all go through that.

I love earth tones, too. For a change, I go with different pillows or pillow covers. I also add or rearrange the decorations on shelves, tables, etc. For example, I might put different pictures out, redecorate the mantle with something more "green" or summery...

i am the same way! but pillows and some flowers to summer it up is always good to change the look up. and make a seashell wreath or the like to place on the wall. happy decorating!

i am looking for new furniture now... its been a task!

It's funny you said that about the couch pillows. Because that was going to be my suggestsion. I have those same pillows for my couch and don't use them bc they are too dark for me. I think your living room looks wonderful. I say keep what ya got.

Check out my blog. I actually just wrote a post today on how to use the color red all year. -Kasey

Your colors are all awesome!

I would slipcover your pillows on the sofa. Yellow and aqua look great with red, then just paint some thrift store finds in aqua and yellow and place them on your mantle and tables to match.

Wallah, you are done.

You can get awesome slipcovers for pillows in Etsy. I just had a ton made and they totally transformed my room.

Well, (as others have said) pillows are an easy fix. I would find something light (cream, white) to cover them with. I would also do a summer arrangement of shells, candles, etc. on the coffee table. Something I do is go to a consignment store and get some cheap candlesticks, plates, etc. and simply paint them white or cream. This way, you've easily changed up the color palette a bit, but you didn't spend more than a few dollars. I think you'd be amazed at how much some lighter accent pieces around the room will really change it up. Good luck! Keep us posted!
