Before and after: antique nightstand

There's nothing better than finding a great project in the making, especially when it's unexpected and cheap. Several months back, hubs and I went for a drive one afternoon. We ended up at a junk/antique store in a small town. I happened to see this cute little nightstand in the back of the store covered up with lots of stuff. I liked the size and shape of it. It needed a lot of TLC, but it still appealed to me. But I didn't know what I'd do with it. I'm really out of space for furniture pieces. The price tag said $12. Sold. For that price, I'd find a place for it. When I told the shop owner I wanted it, she said I could have it for $5.

After sitting in the garage for a month or two, I brought it outside, gave it a good wipe down and sanding, then painted it a light cream color. The top of the table has a leather inlay with some gold design, but unfortunately, whoever owned this piece before me decided to STAIN THE LEATHER when they were refinishing the piece. Sinful! I thought about just painting over it, but decided to leave it as is. If I change my mind, I can paint over it later. Hubs tried to strip the stain from the leather, but it just didn't work.

The original handles on the drawer were broken, and they really weren't my style anyway. I suppose handle sizes have changed over the years because I haven't been able to find any new ones to fit the hole sizes. And I really don't feel like patching the holes and drilling new ones. Too much effort for a $5 table. So instead I found 4 cute ceramic knobs at Hobby Lobby (at 50% off) and I think they look great!

We decided to use this as a TV stand in the bedroom (I know! a TV in the bedroom!). It's a lot cuter than what we were using before.

Whatcha think? Nothing special or fancy, but I love how it looks now.

Love the "after" pic of the table and your creative solution--using 4 knobs instead of two pulls. Interestingly enough, I have almost the same table, which I also painted a creamy white (kept the hardware on mine because the dark hardware was intact and actually looked good with the white).

Thanks for stopping by my blog to say hello and tell me your JCP window treatment story. That is TOO funny! I wonder who all of those consumers are who have driven up demand for the ugly treatments?! Are they all stranded on an island somewhere with no access to HGTV? :) Poor souls :)

Hey, I love your new table! Looks like two tables that I recently bought for my living room. I'm planning on painting mine white too!

One question, my tables have leather on top like yours, did you consider painting them? I'm not sure whether I should paint the leather, is that even possible?

That is very cute & what a deal for $5. I think you could easily just paint over that top leather too & it would look just fine and all one color.

Now that looks great! I love that little table! Did you spray paint it, or use regular paint? What color and finish did you use?

we have an old sewing table ($5 at yard sale) that looks SOOOOO similar to your before pic - I REALLY want to paint it but the hubs likes the wood look and wants it stained.
After seeing yours painted I REALLY REALLY want to paint ours!!! Yours looks fantastic!! I'll have to show my husband and see if it doesn't convince him!! :)

LOVE your table!!! I've been on the hunt for a table just like this!! My poor husband is so tired of hearing me talk about it and look for it that he offered to buy a new table for me. "NO!!" I said. "Why not? You need a table." He countered. "But I don't want a NEW one!!!" Poor man, he's says he'll NEVER understand us girls! :)
